Defender is an horizontally-scrolling, shoot ‘em up arcade video game developed and released by Williams Electronics in February 1981.

The game is set on a fictional planet where the player must defeat waves of invading aliens while protecting astronauts.

Defender was originally developed by pinball programmer Eugene Jarvis who drew inspiration from Space Invaders and Asteroids.

Defender was one of the most important titles of the “Golden Age of Video Arcade Games”, selling over 55,000 units to become the company's best selling game and one of the highest-grossing arcade games ever.

Founded in 1958, Midway Games was an American video game developer and publisher of many well-known franchises including Mortal Kombat, Rampage, Spy Hunter, NBA Jam, Cruis'n, Ms. Pac-Man, and NFL Blitz. Midway also acquired the rights to video games that were originally developed by Williams Electronics and Atari Games, such as Defender, Joust, Robotron 2084, Gauntlet, and the Rush series.

Officially-licensed Midway Arcade Games collectible merchandise.
